The old wolf notices that his strength is decreasing. It is more difficult for him to escape from his pursuers than before. That's why he wants to find a place where he no longer has to hide. The wolf, that animal so present in children's literature, but persecuted by hunters, is presented in Karl Rühman's book as a vulnerable being. We see him in the illustrations - green, blue and ocher by Maria Stalder - hiding from the hunters that he sometimes mistakes for simple walkers, and fleeing towards increasingly distant hiding places. When his strength weakens so much that he no longer knows where to hide, he makes one last attempt to escape and jumps into the large lake.
