In the 1970s, Adela Turin began publishing the collection “Dalla parte delle bambine” in Italy, which Esther Tusquets published shortly after in Spain with the title “In favor of girls.” Translated into several languages, it became a reference for coeducation and equality. "Candy Pink" is one of the most emblematic works of this current and necessary series.
Margarita and other small elephants live isolated in a garden of anemones and peonies; their food to achieve a physical appearance characterized by the candy pink color of their skin, which they reinforce by wearing shoes, ties and collars of the same tone.
They all meet the expectations of their mothers and fathers except her, who suffers the reproaches of her parents until they give up on her being like the others. Underlying this fabled story are issues such as a superficial image cult, or criticism of a society that predestines the future of its individuals and classifies them based on their gender.
But above all, it is a hymn to freedom and equality, seasoned with Nella Bosnia's illustrations, which enhance the message of the text based on realistic figures and bright colors. A story - as in "Arturo and Clementina", "A Happy Catastrophe" and "The Story of the Bonobos with Glasses" - to value the female role, eradicate sexist stereotypes and discrimination, to change mentalities and build a world better.
